Short Romance Stories
The Divine Sex Manual

God wrote the Divine Sex Manual - His own short romance stories in the sexiest book in the Bible

We just started a series at church about sex. My church isn’t your usual, rote, religious establishment. My church is a body of people who say, “Me Too.” In other words, I won’t judge you because I know I’m a broken sinner myself and who am I to say whose sin is bigger? Everyone is welcome in that place and the message is always relevant.

When the pastor started out this mornings talk with, “Today we’re going to talk about what the Bible has to say about romantic love and sex”, of course my ears perked up like Spock at a physics debate. Now you’re talking my language - preach it pastor. I want to hear your versions of short romance stories and divine sex manual!

The Song of Songs or the Song of Solomon – a somewhat forgotten book of the Holy Bible thanks to censorship. This book was kept from the Jewish people for the longest time due to its explicit nature. Pastor defined the word ‘explicit’ for us, “fully and clearly expressed or demonstrated; leaving nothing merely implied; unequivocal.”

I think I have a new one word catch phrase. I would love to have the word, EXPLICIT, etched into my tombstone.

The book is a song sung by an aged couple as they reminisce about their meeting, their courtship, their marriage – and their explicit sex. I have always maintained that the Bible holds the answer to every question we as humans might ask because He created us – life’s manual or guide-book, if you will. Let me re-phrase that; I believe there are answers to every question that might affect our salvation or make our time on this earth better. I say that because I don’t know how He created all this in six days and I don’t think I need to know to live a happier life or accept the fact that He’s my Lord.

But good sex – that will definitely make this earth a better place to hang while I wait to go home, so of course He dedicated a book to a subject so dear to His heart. The song starts with the Bride remembering how she felt about the Groom when they first met. She recalls how handsome he was and how good he smelled. To me, this gives the whole story authenticity because aren’t those two of the first things we notice when we met a man? We are attracted to his physical appearance and as we get physically close, we notice instantly if he has B.O., if his cologne smells good, or the best – if we want to bury our face in his neck because those invisible pheromones are creating that great “chemistry” we hear so much about.

The short romance stories continue as the Bride sings a lot about the Grooms “name”. In this sense she is singing about who he is – who he really is, his character. And she loves who he is! She says to him that she’s been watching and she loves this man’s integrity, moral fiber, and ethic. She loves the mark this man is making on the earth and on the hearts of others. This is the part of the song that sends me off into dream land.

Wouldn’t it be fantastic to have a man after God’s own heart? (No coincidence I use that phrase; Solomon was the son of King David and the Bible tells us that this is the phrase God used to describe David – the very human sinner he was – was a man after God’s own heart.) If I saw that the man who blew my skirt up, (attracted me physically) was also a man chasing after God – now we’re talking about marriage material.

The Bride’s friends chime in that they, too, are very impressed with who this man is and who this couple is together and they stand by them in support of them. Stop and think about that one. How many times have I been involved with a man who received no compliments from my friends or family? How many times have those friends and family politely told me that the man of my affection wasn’t worthy – but did I listen? There is a whole lesson here about SETTLING. Before marriage we need to keep both eyes wide open and listen to those who love us.

The Bride goes on to sing about herself. She makes statements about who she is as a woman – and she is cock sure. In her time and culture it was aesthetically pleasing to have light skin, but this bride was brown as animal skin. Why? I won’t tell the whole story, (find it here) but the short of it – she was confident in herself enough to submit to her Father’s house rules and she worked in the vineyards. In spite of her sun-baked skin, she knew she was still beautiful – and she claimed it. You go girl.
